Stratus Eyepieces

    * Offers a 68 degree apparent field of view for a wide-field window into the heavens

    * Optics are fully multi-coated to maximize light transmission

    * Lens edges are blackened to ensure excellent contrast

    * One-year limited warranty

If you are one of the legions of folks who have "upgraded" to a big-screen television set lately, then you've probably become spoiled by its wonderfully expansive picture.

Well, if you are a telescope user, you will be equally spoiled by the wide-field window into the heavens served up by this Stratus eyepiece. With an apparent field of 68° — which translates to a 71% greater viewing area than that of a typical 52° Plossl — this eyepiece quite literally puts more stars in your eyes. In the same way you feel more a part of the action watching a big-screen TV, with this Stratus "sixty-eight" you will feel like you are really experiencing your celestial targets, rather than just viewing them from afar. You'll never go back to Plossls again!

But it isn't just the Stratus' field of view that will widen your eyes. This ocular has a sophisticated eight-element optical configuration that features a monster 1-1/4"-diameter eye lens to look into.It has a generous 20mm eye relief, so you'll get the "big picture" even if you wear eyeglasses. The optics are fully multi-coated to maximize light transmission to your eyes, and the lens edges are blackened to ensure excellent contrast.

This Stratus eyepiece fits in both 1.25" and 2" focusers. It sports fold-down rubber eyeguards and a knobby rubber grip. The chrome barrel features a setscrew security recess and is threaded for filters. The eyepiece comes with protective lens and barrel caps.

26mm Q70 2" Wide-Field Eyepiece

Reviewer: Daryl Powell

I own many eyepieces, some that cost over six hundred dollars. The new Q- 70s totally hold their own when compared to them. I have also used seven different Q-70s in all sizes and they are all very good. Not a single bad one in the lot. In a flat field scope (RC type) scope, they are razor sharp to the edge!!! Ever bit as good as the Panoptics, Meade SWA!! Very slight curvature was seen and they were totally free from ghosting which I see even in my Naglers and Meades. I disassembled all three units to check the coatings on each element and the blackened lens edges. All lens were blackened and all elements were multi coated. The design, once disassembled, shows why they are free from ghosting and the fewer elements contributes to the brighter images when compared to the same mm eyepiece of other brands. There is very, very little to no sign of astigmatism or coma. Chromatic aberration correction was as good as the other Televue and Meade eyepieces. Contrast and detail were just as good as the Televue and a hair better than the Meade 4000 Plossel or SWA. The machining of the barrels and field stops are of the best tolerances I have seen. These eyepieces would be worth more than there asking price. If you have always wanted 2 inch wide field eyepiece of the best quality, buy this whole set and know you just couldn't do any better. I still can't believe they are (sold at this price point) if you buy the whole set. AA+. (Note from Orion: We do not recommend disassembling the eyepieces.)

Note from Chris:

I recommend the 32mm for telescopes f/8 and above. Below f/8, I recommend the 26mm Q70. You may eventually end up with BOTH!

26mm $99 ($5 SHIPPING)

32mm $99 ($5 SHIPPING)

(I don't recommend the 38mm Q70 unless you have a 10" or larger f/10 or higher telescope. That's why I'm not offering the set of 3)

Want Really Smooth Focus Without Replacing Your R&P Focuser?

The Helical Focuser is the ideal solution. It's buttery smooth with no image shift. This is the ideal device if you share your telescope with the family. All eyes are different and the helical focuser makes it easy to finely adjust focus without inducing vibration. If you observe as a group, you'll find this to be a great help.

$52.95 (FREE SHIPPING!)

  • This precision-machined adapter allows fine helical focusing with just a feather touch
  • It replaces the 2"-to-1.25" eyepiece adapter in scopes equipped with a 2" focuser
  • Features dual rubber grip rings and setscrew lock
  • Works with 1.25" eyepieces
  • Requires at least 9mm inward focus travel

Brighten up your image!

Every time light is reflected from a surface, a little of the brightness is lost. These high grade, dielectric coated diagonals will make a noticeable difference in even the smallest refractors.

Note: If you use only 1.25" eyepieces, you only need the 1.25" diagonal. There is no light gathering advantage with the 2"---unless you use 2" eyepieces! In which case, the 1.25" adapter is INCLUDED with the 2" model so may use either size eyepiece.
